Mercy and Grace in Time of Need

Remember that “the Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth” (Psalm 145:18). He who’s full of grace and truth “is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

David knew the Lord’s power well. During the prophet’s distressful days, he affirmed regarding the Lord, “In the day of my trouble I shall call upon You, for You will answer me” (Psalm 86:7).

Also take comfort that “the prayer of the upright is [God’s] delight” (Proverbs 15:8), so “draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

Ask, Believe and Receive

"In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God for help; He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry for help before Him came into His ears."
Psalm 18:6

“And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

Matthew 21:22

“Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.”

Mark 11:24

“Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.”
John 14:13, 14

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this...”

John 15:7

“ . . . You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.”
James 4:2, 3

“The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

James 5:16

“This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked of Him.”

1 John 5:14, 15

“Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

Hebrews 7:25.

RECENT PRAYER REQUESTS

I’m worried about America. No, I’m not a right-winger (or a left-winger, for that matter). But I am concerned about the next four years. Please pray the Lord will place the man in the White House he wants.

I ask your prayer team to pray for our church family here in Sioux Falls. A lot of gossip and backbiting are going on, and it needs to stop. Also, please pray for our pastor to help lead his flock.

My wife needs prayer. She was laid off a while back and can’t find another job. She’s a good Christian woman and has a lot of job skills, but nothing has come her way. I know we’re in good hands with God, so please pray my wife will receive everything needed to get back to work.

Please pray for the Lord to guide me about going into the military. I’m not sure if I should. I need the job (plus the money and benefits), but it’s a huge commitment.

Hello! My neighbors are big-time Mormons. The dad is the bishop, and the mom is Relief Society president. Whenever our family tries to share our Christian faith with them, they shut us down and change the subject to how their church is so “family oriented.” Well, so are we, perhaps more so. Pray that God will put words in our mouths and soften their hearts to the gospel message.

Jesus says we’ll experience trials (John 16:33). But when placed at the foot of the cross, they’ll become light (Matthew 11:27, 28).
Five Steps to
Powerful Prayers

The Bible offers several ways to pray effectively. Generally, though, when we pray as the Savior instructed us in scrip-ture, we’ll reap the results God wants for us. Try these five biblical ways to improve your prayers.

1. Ask for all your needs and righteous desires (Matthew 6:9–13; Philippians 4:6).

2. Pray persistently (Luke
18:1–6).

3. Petition the Lord faithfully (James 5:15, 16).

4. Pray for your enemies—for people who hate and persecute you (Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:28).

5. Ask according to God’s sovereign will (1 John 5:14, 15).

God bless you as you approach him in prayer.
